Statistics show that roughly 63 million people struggle with chronic constipation. This means each of these individuals has waste material just sitting around and rotting in their intestines!
The idea is not only disgusting, the fact can cause serious health problems.
The average person should have a bowel movement at least once per day. Said movement should be bulky, slightly sticky, and easy to pass. There should be no straining, rocking, grunting, or wiggling around involved in taking a healthy poop.
(If the process is a struggle, you are still considered constipated, regardless of how many times you move your bowels each day.)
Health Problems Caused By Chronic Constipation
If you’re not having smooth, stress-free bowel movements, you may not be properly breaking down and absorbing the nutrients from your food and supplements. This can cause nutritional deficiencies.
Furthermore, constipation can increase your risk of autoimmune disease, chronic inflammatory conditions, and neurological disease.
There is even evidence to suggest that a malfunctioning digestive system can cause mood changes, sometimes leading to depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
Signs You Have a Toxic Colon
Do any of these signs of a toxic colon sound familiar to you?
- Gas and bloating
- Abdominal cramping
- Acid reflux
- Inconsistent bowel habits (constipation and/or diarrhea)
- Brain fog
- Lowered immunity
- Joint pain
If so, it might be time to cleanse your colon naturally with food and supplements.
Food to Eliminate While Cleaning Your Colon
Before I advise you on what to eat and drink to cleanse your colon, I’ll caution you on what to avoid.
For four weeks, do not consume any sugar, coffee, black tea, chocolate, or alcohol. Also, eliminate sources of carbohydrates that are not found in nature, such as: flours, bread, cereals, cakes, and dried fruit bars.
These foods can sit in your gut undigested and become a breeding ground for yeast and bad bacteria.
Foods That Detoxify the Colon Naturally
When your colon is clean, it allows only water, vitamins, and nutrients to be absorbed into your bloodstream.
When your colon is not healthy, it can cause a condition called leaky gut syndrome, whereby toxins, bacteria, and undigested food pass through the colon walls, get into your bloodstream, and cause chronic disease.
Eat these foods for a clean, healthy colon:
- Dark leafy greens
Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard help sweep the colon of toxins and protect the digestive tract from common ailments. Furthermore, these vegetables contain fat-soluble chlorophyll that adheres to the intestinal walls, removing putrefied bacteria while protecting against bad bacterial growth.
- Cruciferous vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are loaded with fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. They also provide 25 to 40 percent of your daily fiber requirement to keep your digestive system running smoothly.
- Flax seeds
Flax seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids to help prevent inflammation and soluble fiber to help support your body’s ability to eliminate waste. Try milled flax seed over a salad or in a cup of your favorite yogurt.
- Organic apple cider vinegar
Raw, organic apple cider vinegar with “the mother” (the active probiotic enzymes) helps to cleanse your digestive system while promoting the growth of healthy bacteria and digestive flora for better nutrient absorption.
- Green tea
Green tea is an excellent natural cleanser as it is high in antioxidants, as well as vitamin C, which helps your body rid itself of accumulated toxins.
Lemons are also a good food for colon cleansing because they act as an antiseptic, which hinders the growth of bad gut bacteria. Lemons are also good for ridding the large intestine of accumulated waste. I recommend starting your day with a glass or two of lemon water to cleanse both your colon and your liver.
When it comes to colon cleansing foods, you can’t beat garlic. Garlic contains strong antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties, which help eliminate pathogenic material from the colon. This food is also a strong antioxidant, which helps reduce inflammation so digestion, nutrient absorption, and elimination are all improved.
- Aloe vera juice
Aloe vera is another smart choice for natural colon cleansing. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties, which can help prevent a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases. Moreover, aloe soothes the gastrointestinal tract and has demonstrated the ability to naturally treat ulcerative colitis.
Supplements That Provide Natural Colon Detoxification
In addition to eating foods that naturally cleanse your colon, you can enhance their effect by adding a few supplements.
For example, I recommend:
- Psyllium husk
Psyllium husk is a bulk-forming laxative that is widely used as a colon cleanser. It is very effective at sweeping excess waste from the colon so your digestive system is better able to digest food and absorb nutrients.
Whether you take psyllium fiber in powder or capsule form, be sure to drink at least two extra glasses of water afterward. Otherwise, you may temporarily worsen your constipation.
- Activated charcoal
Activated charcoal is an amazing natural colon cleaner. When you swallow activated charcoal capsules, the charcoal latches onto built-up toxins and flushes them from your body. This supplement is so powerful, it has long been used as an antidote to poison and drug overdose.
Note: Take caution when using activated charcoal if you are on a prescription medication. Prescriptions should be taken four hours before or after taking charcoal to avoid interfering with effectiveness. When in doubt, consult your physician or pharmacist.
- Coconut oil
Coconut oil is a strong natural laxative that is packed with essential nutrients. Not only will coconut oil help cleanse your body of toxins, it can help reduce the symptoms of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and leaky gut syndrome by restoring microbial balance.
- Slippery elm
Slippery elm contains mucilage, starch, tannins, vanadium, and zinc that draw impurities from the intestines while coating and soothing irritated intestinal tissues. It has even been shown to be effective in treating stomach ulcers.
When you cleanse your colon of excess waste and toxins, you’re giving your body the chance to properly absorb nutrients so your immune system stays healthy and strong.
After finishing with a thorough colon cleanse, I strongly recommend following this with a liver cleanse.
